Paper and metal filters change how much oil and fine coffee material reaches your cup. Paper absorbs some oils and catches fine particles, producing a cleaner, lighter-bodied brew. Metal lets more oil and fine particles through, giving fuller texture and often visible sediment. Paper is single-use; metal is rinsed and reused.
AeroPress's own filter comparison makes that distinction and notes that grind and steep time change the result. Filter material is one choice among several, not a guarantee of a particular flavor.

What paper changes
Paper is a fine barrier. It traps particles that a metal disc would let through and absorbs some of the coffee's oils before they reach the cup. The usual result is a cleaner cup with less texture, which can make acidity and origin notes easier to notice. It will not remove every fine particle, especially with a very fine grind, and it adds one consumable per brew.
What metal changes
A reusable metal filter does not absorb oils or hold back fines in the same way. More of both reach the cup, so expect fuller body, more oil on the surface and possibly sediment at the bottom. Rinse it after each brew and wash it periodically so coffee oils do not build up. Our AeroPress dishwasher guide explains which parts can go in the machine and which should be washed by hand; follow the instructions for your exact model.
Grind and steep time still matter
A coarse grind leaves fewer fine particles for either filter to catch, while a fine grind gives both more to work with. A longer steep also extracts more. If you compare the filters, keep the dose, grind, water temperature, steep time and press the same, so the filter is the only intentional difference. Then choose by the cup in front of you.
Match the filter to your brewer and cap
The size and cap matter as much as the material. Read the size name on the filter pack and match it to the exact AeroPress and cap you use. AeroPress's comparison covers the Original, Go and Clear, but that is not a universal compatibility list. If the label does not name your combination, check with AeroPress before buying.
